The It Happened campaign was inspired and launched by the nonprofit organization, The Mama Bear Effect to give survivors of child sexual abuse an opportunity to share their voice, when often they are not able to do so with the very people they know. We know that awareness is essential to breaking down the misconceptions, denial, and silence that enables child sexual abuse. And we know there are too many survivors who are still bearing the pain of unspoken or unsupported abuse.
It Happens – every day, in all kinds of situations, in all kinds of families and communities. Every day countless children and their families are preyed upon – often by someone they know and trust, the people we’d least expect.
No matter how long it takes for survivors to speak, no matter whether they’re believed, supported, and protected – their story matters.
